JA volunteers deliver fun, hands-on, age-appropriate lessons that teach basic economics, business, civic responsibility, problem-solving skills, and the value of staying in school to children in local Central Massachusetts public schools.
Volunteers are trained by JA staff and are paired up with teachers in local public schools that have requested the JA program for grades K-12. Classes are currently available in Auburn, Boylston, Douglas, Holden, Fitchburg, Leominster, and Worcester.
Once volunteers are trained by the JA staff and assigned to their particular class, they receive a grade-specific curriculum kit, which contains all the lessons and activities they will need to complete the program. The JA class is then scheduled at a mutually convenient time for both teacher and volunteer.
Throughout the course of delivering the program, volunteers are encouraged to personalize the lessons by drawing upon their own success stories and relevant experience. In this way, volunteers also serve as role models and mentors to the students.
The volunteer commitment for an elementary class (K-6) is only five classes (approximately five hours), in addition to time for training and transportation to the school. The commitment for middle grades (7-8) is six to eight classes, and at the high school level (9-12), eight to ten classes.
Here is what our volunteers have to say: "Words can't do justice for the amazing kindness and unconditional support shown to me from the children as well as the faculty and staff. I never expected to get so much out of Junior Achievement" "It felt so good to know that I am making a difference. The best part about JA is interacting with the youngsters in the class - very, very rewarding!"
To be a volunteer, you should be comfortable speaking in front of a large group and working with children. Volunteers should also have a basic understanding of business and economic issues and have flexibility in their schedule to deliver the series of classes during the school day on days and times determined by the volunteer and their assigned teacher.
All potential volunteers must submit and pass a Criminal Offender Records Information (CORI) check prior to entering any classroom.
